Public Health Dentistry is branch of specialisation in dentistry which focuses on the overall oral health of the community. The branch deals with preventive and curative services for individual patients and also promotion of better oral health for community at large.  This branch shows a different role of dentist in society as a provider of comprehensive care to the public. Uneven distribution of dental care facilities especially in rural areas, lack of awareness regarding oral health and hygiene are bound to make Public Health Dentistry an important discipline.

This department was established in the year 1987 for the undergraduates under the able guidance of Dr. B.R. Ashok Kumar M.D.S. Since then it has taken quantum leaps in terms of its expansion and resource fullness. Recognition status for the undergraduate department was obtained in 1990, to add to it the postgraduate course started in 1992 with the initial intake of two students per year, affiliated to Karnataka University, Dharwad. From September 1996 the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore took over and gradually from 2002, onwards the department has increased the intake by one seat, thus bringing up the total to three postgraduate seats. From 2006 onwards it is affiliated to KLE University.

The subject of Public Health Dentistry is of vital importance to the undergraduates as well as for postgraduate students. Under the above guidelines, the main motto of the department of Public Health Dentistry is “Affordable, Accessible and Sustainable Oral health Care”.

The undergraduates and Post graduates in our department are trained to achieve this motto. Undergraduates training includetheoretical teaching, clinical practices to provide comprehensive care, health educations, provision of care at primary health centers, outreach programmes, research activities / ICMR projects and publications.

Postgraduates are trained to provide comprehensive dental care, take up community base projects, participation in national and international conferences, NSS activities, advance training in research and biostatistics. Students are trained to develop communication skills to take up community responsibility.
